LS clears ₹41,455 crore for additional spending

THE Lok Sabha on Monday cleared the first tranche of Supplementary Demands for Grants, seeking an allocation of ₹41,455 crore of additional spending by the Centre in the current financial year, including expenditure of over ₹18,000 crore for fertilizer subsidy.

As per the Supplementary Demands, parliamentary approval was sought for ₹18,525 crore towards fertilizer and allied subsidies, and nearly 9,500 crore for the petroleum ministry to compensate oil marketing companies for under-recoveries. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Centre had created a “bumper buffer” of urea to cater to higher demand following a good monsoon and increased fertilizer usage by farmers.
