WITH an aim for a podium finish in the shorter relay events at the 2026 Asian Games, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) plans to shortlist top eight sprinters during the upcoming domestic competitions in September in Ranchi, Sandeep Mehta, secretary AFI said on Wednesday.

Selection of the athletes will be based on performance during the 64th National Open Athletics Championships scheduled to be held in Ranchi from September 27 to 30 in Jharkhand, the AFI secretary added. "Top six athletes will be selected during the Ranchi meet. The remaining two sprinters will be shortlisted on the basis of overall performance during the 2025 domestic competitions," Mehta said.
