RENOWNED sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, best known for designing the Statue of Unity -- world's tallest statue -- in Gujarat, passed away at his Noida residence late on Wednesday night.

Ace sculptor Ram V Sutar passes away at 100

He was 100 and suffering from age-related illnesses, his son Anil said.

Mourning Sutar's death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his works were powerful expression of India's history, culture and collective spirit.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Ram Sutar Ji, a remarkable sculptor whose mastery gave India some of its most iconic landmarks, including the Statue of Unity in Kevadia," Modi said in a post on X.
