The screeching championship
The Mercury
|May 08, 2025
THE seagulls were kicking up the dickens of a din in the Belgian coastal town of De Panne the other day.
But actually, it turns out it wasn’t the gulls at all. It was the humans - 60 of them from 14 countries - participating in the European Gull Screeching Championship, according to Huffpost.
The soundalikes have the unusual goal of screeching to sound as close as possible to the screeches of gulls. Why? It’s good to have a goal in life, that's why.
Contestants were awarded points based on the quality of their sound and performance in three categories: adult, junior, and colony (that’s a group of gulls). The contest is intended to create a more positive image of the seabirds, which have been called “trash birds”, “beach rats”, and “klepto-gulls” by ignorant naysayers.
