THIS past Easter weekend, South Africa was shaken by an alarming incident that could have profound implications for our democracy - a reported assassination attempt on Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

As Mashatile travelled home from an ANC National Executive Committee meeting, a vehicle in his convoy came under gunfire in Boksburg, Gauteng. Although Mashatile initially believed these were stones, closer inspection revealed that bullets had struck his convoy. The gravity of this incident cannot be overstated. Mashatile is the country’s second-in-command, a critical figure in the ANC, and potentially its next president.
