IT'S FASTING time and vegetarian outlets like Kara Nichhas are bustling with devout Hindu customers as well as others.

But even if it's not fasting time, Kara Nichhas is always busy with poor customers looking for a cheep plate of food in these hard times. Its founder, Nichha, an impoverished man himself, arrived in South Africa seeking a better future and, after working in several places, landed a cook's job at Kanjees in Church Street in Pietermaritzburg.

In 1935 Kanjee decided to return to India and sold his food outlet to Mr Nichhas. And so in 1936 Kara Nichha was established. The new owner had a great vision.
