And Bazball died in the city of churches. This England performance was the saddest one. To this point the Ashes series has been a blur.
Seven days of chaotic cricket that had to be reflected upon to be understood. But day two in Adelaide was different. A below-par batting display from Australia had given England a chance. And on a scorching hot day in South Australia, where temperatures tipped over 40 degrees, and conditions for batting were perfect, the stage was set for Bazball's referendum. Bat the day, bat big, and the great comeback of 2025-26 was on. Instead, across 68 tortuous overs, England faltered, edged and failed. They finished the day 213 for eight, trailing by 158 runs and with their series hopes going down the drain.
