Who could be out.. and who could be in
The Journal
|May 08, 2025
NEWCASTLE United’s incoming business promises to excite this summer but there will be equal intrigue as to which of Eddie Howe's senior side make way once the window open. On the face of it, the United head coach has six big calls to make regarding members of his St James’ Park dressing room.
Howe has point blank fended off the idea of selling the club's biggest and brightest stars. Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak all have their admirers but are crucial to the Magpies’ short and long-term future.
United’s PSR concerns may have lessened significantly of late but that doesn’t mean some sales won't be entertained. With that in mind, we take a look at players on the cusp and fighting for their future...
ODYSSEAS VLACHODIMOS
It would be a remarkable turn of events if Odysseas Vlachodimos remains beyond the summer. The Greek No 1 has had just one 45-minute appearance in the early stages of the Carabao Cup and now appears to be behind John Ruddy in the pecking order on Tyneside.
Vlachodimos’ arrival was a confusing one, with the shot-stopper becoming the fifth keeper on Newcastle’s books as part of the deal that saw Nottingham Forest purchase Elliot Anderson last summer.
Howe has praised the 31-year-old’s work behind the scenes whenever quizzed on the former Benfica keeper but there seems to be no first-team future for him.
MARTIN DUBRAVKA
From one reserve stopper to one who has played a monumental part in United’s season. The Slovakian was close to joining Saudi side Al-Shabab in January before Howe persuaded him to remain.
