Wellness studio moves into former art gallery

A NEW business has moved into the former Side Gallery on Newcastle Quayside, following the organisation's confirmation it would not reopen.

Following its 2023 closure in the face of funding cuts, Amber Film and Photograph Collective – which runs the gallery – said it would continue to stage projects, educational programmes and provide digital access to its collection.

It follows a campaign to save the gallery which opened in 1977 and built a reputation for showcasing photography that documented working class life in the North East, and further afield.

Laura Laffer, the managing director of Amber Film and Photography, thanked those who got behind the campaign, which generated funds to bridge a gap until grants were secured and allowed time for cataloguing of the AmberSide collection into a new digital system, the launch of a new website and to open up access to schools and communities.
