Roofer fell asleep behind the wheel

Bryan Storey

Bryan Storey had gone to the Northumberland holiday park for the weekend but found the caravan he was staying in so cold he couldn't doze off.

The following day, the roofer borrowed a car to go home to pick up cash and as he headed back north to Haggerston Castle, he fell asleep in the warm Vauxhall Corsa. Newcastle Crown Court heard that at that same time, around 4.15pm on September 14, a 29-year-old woman was driving a Jeep on a single lane stretch of the A1 near Alnwick with her friend in the front passenger seat.

The woman was heading south when she became aware of a black Vauxhall Corsa coming the other way. It later transpired that Storey was at the wheel, unconscious.
