'Helloooo' from Mrs Doubtfire as she takes in city

N a hot Newcastle afternoon, Mrs Doubtfire - in her trademark tweed skirt and sensible cardigan - enjoyed a first taste, quite literally, of Geordie hospitality.

- BARBARA HODGSON, CRAIG CONNOR

The famous Scottish nanny might have been a bit overdressed for a summer outing but an open-top bus jaunt around Newcastle brought a bit of a breeze as she summed up such local delights as a Greggs pastry with searing honesty.

"I think it’s the work of the devil - devilishly good" she said.

The grand lady, played by the late Robin Williams in 1993 comedy hit Mrs Doubtfire, was seen in a video clip last week preparing for her trip up north. She was here to find out more about the city ahead of Mrs Doubtfire the musical coming to the Theatre Royal next year.

So, how was she enjoying her visit?

Seated aboard a city tour bus in the baking heat, she had already checked out a Newcastle United store - causing “chaos” she admits - and had even tried a spot of yoga on Newcastle Quayside.

Next she was off to the Gateshead side of the River Tyne, to pose for photographs against the backdrop of the Millennium Bridge, before a drive to see The Angel of the North. And there was time on board for that quick lunch snack and the famous Greggs sausage roll she had heard so much about.
