Don’t stunt the stump plea as new cage put up

MEMBERS of the public have been urged not to leave tributes at the Sycamore Gap site as protective measures have been put in place around Northumberland’s most famous tree stump.

Since the tree’s felling in September 2023, visitors have left stones, tokens and other tributes on and around the stump, despite the fact that it is fenced off.

The National Trust and Northumberland National Park Authority have now placed protective netting to form a cage over the tree to safeguard its natural regrowth. Dan Madden, property ecologist for the National Trust, said that the tributes were having a negative impact on the stump’s regrowth, which remains fragile.
