PLANS for a brand new 'BMX pump track' in a South Tyneside park have been put forward.

- CHRIS BINDING

This year South Tyneside Council unveiled proposals to establish a fresh sporting venue within West Park, South Shields.

The scheme is designed to offer a cost-free and accessible spot for cycling enthusiasts of varying skill levels and includes the transformation of four disused tennis courts for its new purpose.

Future plans include a large tarmac pump track, rumble areas and a toddler area for youngsters learning to ride, along with associated landscaping.

In a statement released earlier this year regarding the planning application, South Tyneside Council's deputy leader, Councillor Jane Carter, highlighted that the initiative is a direct response to the wishes of the community.

She said pump tracks are "ideal for people of all ages to come with bikes, scooters, skates and skateboards", catering to everyone from "little ones starting out on their balance bikes to more advanced riders wanting to develop their skills."

The proposal details can be read on South Tyneside Council's planning portal website, where residents are also encouraged to submit their feedback as part of the ongoing consultation.
