|October 17, 2025
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya arrived in New Delhi today for her first official visit to India since assuming office.
This is her first visit to India ever since she assumed office on September 24, 2024.
The three-day visit is being framed as a renewal of historic ties and a platform for deepening bilateral cooperation across trade, education, technology and regional diplomacy.
Amarasuriya will take part in the NDTV World Summit and talk about 'Steering change in uncertain times' on the first day of the two-day event.
Amarasuriya is the 16th Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the third woman to hold office after Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Earlier in the day, the External Affairs Ministry welcomed her by noting that her visit “continues the tradition of regular and close engagements” between India and Sri Lanka, reinforcing a shared cultural and strategic bond.
External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar called on her.
Her agenda includes high-level talks in Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others.
A highlight of her first day was a return to her alma mater, Hindu College, Delhi University, where she studied sociology between 1991 and 1994.
