Few vegetables are as familiar or as indispensable in kitchens as the onion.

Medicinal value of onions

Found in almost every cuisine, it has a reputation that goes far beyond its pungent aroma and ability to make one’s eyes water. Whether large and glossy or small and sharp, onions are valued not only for their flavour but also for their remarkable nutritional and medicinal qualities.

The humble onion is a storehouse of nutrients that contribute to health in many ways. It contains essential vitamins such as C and B6, minerals like potassium and manganese, and antioxidants that help protect body tissues. Onions are low in calories but rich in fibre, making them a valuable addition to a balanced diet. The sulfur compounds that give onions their characteristic smell and taste also play an important role in promoting heart health and boosting the immune system. These compounds help reduce bad cholesterol, improve blood circulation and support the body’s defence against infection.
