Balancing the Feast
The Island
|April 17, 2025
With the arrival of the festive season comes a welcome break from routine and a time to reconnect with loved ones. But along with the laughter, lights, and family gatherings, there's one more thing that makes its annual appearance—binge eating.
-
Laden with sweets, snacks, and lavish meals, festive feasts are often hard to resist. And why should we resist completely? Celebrations are meant to be enjoyed. However, overindulgence can sometimes leave us feeling bloated, lethargic, or even guilty.
The good news is that you don't have to punish yourself for indulging. With a few smart strategies, it's entirely possible to minimise the ill-effects of festive overeating and restore balance to your body and mind.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
One of the most overlooked yet effective ways to bounce back from overeating is to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated helps flush out excess sodium, reduces bloating, and aids digestion. "Start your day with a glass of warm water with lemon. It gently wakes up your digestive system and acts as a mild detox," advises Dr. Rina Mehta, a Mumbai-based nutritionist. Herbal teas such as peppermint, ginger, or fennel are also excellent post-meal options to calm the stomach and reduce gas.
