Council waste collection changes set to benefit the local environment

Eco-conscious North Ayrshire Council are ringing the changes in their waste collection services in a bid to help safeguard the environment.
Changes to how larger items are collected by the local authority's Waste team are set to come into effect this summer.
At a meeting of Cabinet on Tuesday, officers delivered a report into the new requirement to separately collect Waste Upholstered Domestic (WUD) seating items such as sofas, futons, cushions, stools and electrical reclining chairs.
Studies have shown that these items contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which are chemicals and can be harmful to the environment.
Legislation is now in place requiring Waste Upholstered Domestic Seating products, which includes items like sofas, sofa beds, chairs, stools etc. which must be collected and managed separately from other bulky waste items and disposed of through incineration to destroy the chemicals.
