Son held after director Rob Reiner and wife found dead

The son of Rob Reiner has been arrested on murder charges after the director of films including When Harry Met Sally and his wife were found fatally stabbed in their Los Angeles home.

Nick Reiner, 32, was being held in a Los Angeles County jail yesterday on a $4m (£3m) bond, according to jail records. An official with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said he had been arrested on homicide charges.

Police found the bodies of Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele, 68, at their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles, on Sunday.

Nick Reiner spoke openly over the years about his struggles with substance abuse and about being homeless at times when he was on the run and refusing to go into rehabilitation. He told People magazine in a 2016 interview that he first went into rehab for drug abuse at age 15 - and that he eventually had at least 17 stays in rehab facilities over the years.

Father and son co-wrote the film Being Charlie, based on Nick’s experiences of heroin addiction and homelessness. “It was the most personal thing I’ve ever been involved in,” Rob Reiner told the podcaster Marc Maron in 2016.
