Can Mahmood really get immigration under control?
The Independent
|March 05, 2026
Home secretary Shabana Mahmood, seemingly on a one-woman mission to win Labour voters back from apathy and Reform UK, has announced her latest move to cut migration, especially the so-called “illegal” kind: an immediate ban on various work, study and visitor visas for citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan.
It all sounds a bit Trumpian, but she is planning to go much, much further.
Why is she doing this?
Because, she says, too many people have been “seeking to exploit our generosity”, and she wants to show that she can “restore order and control to our borders”.
Will she?
We will find out more from another keynote speech on the issue, and updated proposals for reducing one of the supposed “pull” factors for all types of migration - the notion of settling on an indefinite basis in the UK, and thence attaining an automatic (and arguably too easy) path to benefits and citizenship, without, for example, sufficiently good English.
She set out these draconian moves to increase deportations last September, and will now be moving to fresh laws.
How’s she doing?
