George Hotel 'will attract lots of people'

KIRKLEES Council has given assurances that it will see a return on its investment in the George Hotel scheme, though it can't say when this will be.

Original plans for the George Hotel were given the green light in August 2023. Since then an additional £10m has been allocated to the project that was initially expected to cost £20m, and a further planning application was submitted in May to address structural issues relating to the foundations of the building.

The latest plans, which are awaiting a decision, would see the dismantling and rebuilding of the hotel's facade on John William Street and allow for the number of rooms to be increased from 90 to 108. The new-look George Hotel is expected to have a bar, restaurant, gym, and conference facilities, once works are completed.
