'TOUCH OF THE EXOTIC' AS NEW CITY STORE OPENS

A NEW store has brought a touch of the exotic to Plymouth city centre – and judging from its opening day it’s going to be a big hit.

The Alfu International supermarket has opened in New George Street underneath the Plymouth Cross House student flats and hotel, selling foods from around the world.

And when The Herald visited in the hours before it opened recently, it found it was already being besieged by shoppers.

Dozens of people called in to ask when it was opening and staff said it had been like that for days beforehand as finishing touches were put to the supermarket.

“We had people coming here on a daily basis - before we opened,” said Gery Samardzhieva, who is the co-manager of the store.

She said staff had beavered away for weeks to have Alfu International ready to greet Plymouth shoppers.

“It’s been blood, sweat and tears,” she said.
