Suttie’s strike earns Argyle's women a victory over Oxford

PLYMOUTH Argyle Women produced a disciplined and determined performance on the road as Arabella Suttie’s first half goal earned them a valuable 1-O win away to Oxford United in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division ‘on Sunday.

- By LEXI SANDERS

Argyle were disrupted before a ball had even been kicked, with Tamara Wilcock forced to withdraw during the warm-up after feeling discomfort. Paris Dalton stepped into the starting XI at short notice, yet the Greens settled impressively and controlled the early tempo.

The visitors fashioned the game's first real opening when Charlotte Whitmore cut in from the right and whipped a left-footed strike just wide of the far post. Moments later, Whitmore again found space at the back post but lifted her effort over the bar under pressure.

Caitlin Smith then flicked narrowly into the side netting after clever movement inside the area, while Layla Proctor headed off target from an inviting Suttie free kick.

Oxford carried their own threat, particularly through Holly Manders, but Argyle's back line stayed composed. At the heart of it was Suttie, who not only defended assertively but also played a pivotal role at the opposite end.

The breakthrough came six minutes before halftime, and Suttie’s finish may not have been the prettiest - as she joked afterwards - but it was all about anticipation.
