Never underestimate the power of a woman

Sunset on the Devon and Cornwall border

“NEVER underestimate the power of a woman.” That is a slogan apparently used to promote The Ladies’ Home Journal in 1941 - and 84 years later, we're still saying it.

I did the other week whilst on Harbour Master duty in Exmouth. My mate Caz and I were just getting geared up to launch the rib when we heard about a car that was stuck in the sand on Shelly beach, with the tide coming in fast.

Now before anyone starts shouting about holiday-makers who don’t understand the tides and think they can pull up on a beach and park all day... hold up. This was not the case.

This was an experienced ‘boater’ who had driven down on to the shingle to launch their boat. But they didn’t realise there was a shelf of soft sand which, despite having a high-end 4x4, they couldn’t gain traction on.

Well, Caz, a full-time member of the Harbour Master’s crew, and I made our way over to the beach, where a crowd had gathered.
