'I'm on the mend and raring to get back to work'
The Herald
|December 18, 2025
IT hasn't been easy for me to sit back these past few weeks.
Anyone who knows me knows that stepping away from the council is not something I do lightly. But I also know that sometimes you have to listen to the advice and take the time to mend and recover - and that's exactly what I've been doing.
I'm hugely grateful to the incredible staff at Derriford Hospital for the care and treatment I've received. They've been outstanding, and I can’t thank them enough.
I also want to pay a big thank you to my cabinet colleagues. They've stepped up and taken on extra responsibilities to make sure the council kept moving forward while I've been away. Knowing the city was in such capable hands has made it easier for me to focus on getting well.
Being at home has given me a lot of time to think and reflect on the past 12 months - and I've been truly amazed by how much we've achieved together.
The year has been full of ambition and achievement. Of course, it hasn't been without its challenges. Like every council in the country, we've faced significant financial pressures, but what stands out is how Plymouth has responded: with creativity, determination, and a shared belief in our future.
Our city centre is transforming. Armada Way reached a major milestone earlier this year, with the first two sections opening to the public - a glimpse of the vibrant, green space that's coming, opening up views to the Hoe and creating new spaces for events and play. And speaking of play, it won’t be long before the first pieces of the incredible Armada Way play village are installed, a unique feature that will make the city centre a destination for families.
