Traffic to hit record levels in run-up to Christmas

Britain’s roads and runways will take a festive pounding today as traffic peaks before Christmas and record numbers head to the skies.
Motoring organisations forecast exceptionally busy roads for the season, with those driving away for Christmas expected to depart in bigger numbers tomorrow and on Christmas Eve. But commuter journeys and shopping trips, together with early getaways, meant traffic pain would peak today.
Departures from UK airports are also expected to peak today, in what the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says will be the busiest Christmas season for air travel on record.
