TikTok Creators Find Inspiration in TV From 25 Years Ago as Nostalgia Hits Gen Z
The Guardian
|June 04, 2025
TikTok likes to see itself as at the forefront of the latest youth culture, setting the trends to follow, but across music, television and daily life, something more familiar is trending on the social media platform – a new generation of nostalgia.
Music and TV from the early 2000s are being rediscovered by generation X and ageing millennials on the short-form video site, as well as being discovered by generation Z. Use of the nostalgia hashtag is up 36% on last year across entertainment content.
Sex and the City, which ran from 1999 to 2004, has been the subject of 108,000 TikTok videos, a total that has doubled over the past year. The US teen drama Gossip Girl, which ran from 2007 to 2012, has been the subject of 1.2m videos. Gilmore Girls, which ran from 2000 to 2007, has 1m associated videos and The Vampire Diaries, which aired for eight years until 2017, is one of the most discussed, with 2m videos so far.
There has also been a revival in Skins, a British drama about a group of teenagers from Bristol, which first aired on E4 in 2007. It has 1.6m posts globally to date.
