Response to Southport riots 'failed to look at racism link'

The response to the riots in England and Northern Ireland in 2024 failed to address the root causes and delinked the violence from racism, a thinktank has claimed.

A paper by the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) said an obfuscation of the causes and consequences of the riots risked legitimising further far-right mobilisation and vigilante violence. It said that what happened had often been reduced to an issue of mindless thuggery or violence.

Liz Fekete, the IRR’s director, said: "What emerges from the binding narrative of defendants who participated in the riots could be compared to an echo chamber.
