Proposed UK immigration rules could hinder green targets - report
The Guardian
|June 18, 2025
Tough rules announced in the government's immigration white paper could jeopardise the UK's net zero mission by creating labour shortages, a report said yesterday.
The white paper released last month included plans to raise the minimum qualification for skilled worker visas and maintain the higher salary threshold of £38,700 introduced by the Conservative government last year.
A report by the Centre for European Reform (CER) calculated that more than half of the foreign-born workers currently doing "green jobs" - 260,000 out of 465,000 - would not be allowed in under the new rules.
