The socialist Democrat Zohran Mamdani is 19 points ahead of his rival, the centrist Andrew Cuomo, in the New York mayoral race, according to a new poll.

Mamdani, 33, is edging further ahead of both the former New York state governor Cuomo and incumbent city mayor, Eric Adams, both running as independents, before November's election to pick a leader for the largest city in the US.

According to a poll released on Tuesday, Mamdani - who has been endorsed by fellow leftwingers Senator Bernie Sanders and congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - holds a 19-point lead over Cuomo, his nearest rival.

In a metropolis that is traditionally Democratic, Mamdani is also far ahead of the Republican Curtis Sliwa. It is, however, a small-scale survey: the Siena poll sampled only 317 registered voters and cited an unusually wide 6.7% margin of error.

Mamdani is Muslim, which garnered some negative attacks before the primary, and a member of State Socialists in Office, the Democrat Socialists of America's nine-member bloc in New York's state assembly.
