Man charged with attempted murder of girl, 11, in street attack

A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of an 11-year-old girl who was stabbed eight times while visiting Leicester Square, London, with her mother Ioan Pintaru, 32, appeared before Westminster magistrates yesterday.
He was also charged with possession of a bladed article, described as a steak knife, in a public place.
Pintaru, a Romanian citizen of no fixed address, the court heard, had the charges read to him via an interpreter during the 10-minute hearing.
David Burns, prosecuting, said a woman and her 11-year-old daughter were in Leicester Square as tourists when the defendant "approached the 11-year-old, placed her into a headlock... then stabbed her eight times to the body".
