Home Office records 10 assaults on asylum seekers in its care a day

The Home Office is recording an average of 10 assaults a day on asylum seekers in its care, according to internal government data.
Figures reveal that there were 5,960 referrals of assaults of asylum seekers while in the care of the Home Office between January 2023 and August 2024. There were also 380 referrals of victims of hate crimes to its internal safeguarding hub.
The data, obtained using freedom of information (Fol) laws, shows the Home Office received 11,547 reports that people in its care were victims of trafficking and 4,686 reports that they were victims of torture.
Steve Smith, the CEO of the charity Care4Calais, said: "These statistics are appalling but they don't surprise me. Our local groups raise serious safeguarding concerns with the Home Office and its contractors virtually every day, but it feels like they are routinely ignored."
