Firefighter union boss says wildfires have exposed big divides in resources

Wildfires across the UK during hot, dry springs and summers have exposed a "postcode lottery" of firefighting resources which must be addressed, the head of the Fire Brigades Union has claimed.

Steve Wright, the union's general secretary, said public safety was at risk and demanded a statutory body to ensure that each fire and rescue service had enough staff and fire engines.

His comments come after data showed that 286 wildfires had been recorded between 1 January and 4 April 2025 - more than 100 above the number recorded in the same period in 2022, a year that saw record-breaking temperatures and unprecedented wildfire activity.

Data has also revealed the UK could be on track for its worst year on record for wildfires; an area of more than 95 sq miles (25,000 hectares) has been scorched since 1 January, according to European Forest Fire Information System figures.

According to the Met Office, the fires are caused by dry and breezy conditions in spring, but also because a damp winter encouraged plant growth, which has provided fuel.

Scientists have said climate breakdown is creating the conditions for more wildfires across the globe, including in the UK.
