Embattled US defence secretary insists strikes on boats are legal
The Guardian
|December 08, 2025
The US defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, has doubled down on his dismissal of concerns over the legality of US strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean, arguing that Donald Trump has the power to take military action “as he sees fit”.
Hegseth’s leadership of the Pentagon is under growing scrutiny over the strikes that have killed more than 80 people since September, including among some Republican members of Congress.
He argued in a speech at the Ronald Reagan presidential library in Simi Valley, California, that he was protecting Americans. Hegseth said: “If you’re working for a designated terrorist organisation and you bring drugs to this country in a boat, we will find you and we will sink you. Let there be no doubt about it.”
