Charging at home
The Guardian
|November 08, 2025
From getting plugged in to finding the best tariffs
When you buy an electric vehicle you need to think about how you will charge it at home. The two main things you will need are a charger and a smart meter.
The kit
While it is possible to charge your EV with a standard three-pin plug, the process is extremely slow. Instead, it is best to install a charger - a dedicated AC station that operates at much faster speeds and connects to the car via a cable.
Many home chargers will charge at a maximum rate of 7.4kW, which means a typical EV will be able to do 25-30 miles for every hour it is plugged in.
Auto Express puts the average cost of installing a charger at between £800 and £1,200. Government grants of £350 are available if you rent your home or own a flat with private off-street parking or a house with on-street.
You will need a smart meter so that your energy supplier can check your usage throughout the day to apply the correct rates at different times (see below).
