A helicopter was sent to survey the area around the Rimpfischhorn after climbers alerted authorities to the discovery of abandoned skis near the summit on Saturday.

"The bodies of five people were quickly found," police said, adding that Swiss authorities had opened an investigation and were working to identify the victims.

The Rimpfischhorn, a 4,199-metre (13,776ft) mountain to the east of Zermatt, near the Italian border, is popular with back-country skiers.
