'DEVASTATED' BUSINESS OWNERS 'STUCK IN LIMBO' OVER THE SHAMBLES RELOCATION PLAN

- By GARETH LIGHTFOOT

SHOPKEEPERS have told how they are “stuck in limbo” and facing the prospect of moving their business with council plans for The Shambles on Stockton High Street.

Independent traders who have built up a loyal base of customers in the 19th century shopping centre and market hall fear they may have to close if the plans to “market the Shambles for use as a food and beverage offer” go ahead.

Some say they will not be able to afford to move elsewhere as they expressed their worry and uncertainty over the proposals.

Bosses at Stockton Council have announced the plans as part of regeneration proposals to fit with the forthcoming Stockton Waterfront urban park. They say they are “working with existing tenants to explore the relocation of their businesses and will provide tailored business support and advice”.

However, the owners of small businesses were dismayed to receive letters from the council last week, saying The Shambles had been “identified as a potential for future alternative commercial uses, with a proposal to explore marketing the whole building to a food and beverage operator.

“At this stage, no decisions have been made. However, if approved and a food and beverage operator is sought, the council will require vacant possession,” the letter stated.
