Uncertainty abounds as Boro left in limbo

EDWARDS UNLIKELY TO LEAD TEAM AMID WOLVES LINKS

- By CRAIG JOHNS AND BRIAN DICK

IT remains unclear who will lead Middlesbrough against Birmingham City today - as Rob Edwards' future as Boro head coach remains in serious doubt.

Wolves made Edwards their primary target after talks broke down with Gary O'Neil following the sacking last weekend of Vitor Pereira. The Black Country club are bottom of the Premier League and winless from their opening ten games.

Despite confidence that Edwards would commit to Boro and reject Wolves' interest, serious doubts have been cast after Wolves made an official approach to speak to the 42-year-old on Thursday afternoon. Boro rejected that approach and, as things stand, their stance on that remains unchanged.

However, Edwards did not take Boro training yesterday morning ahead of today's clash - it is understood his assistants Adi Viveash and Harry Watling led the session and his usual pre-match press conference that afternoon was also cancelled.

Instead, it's understood Edwards was in meetings with senior Boro officials throughout the day to try and resolve the issue one way or the other.

As things stand, however, it's not yet known whether Edwards will be remaining in post at Boro, or whether he will make clear a desire to speak to Wolves.

Reports elsewhere have suggested that he is interested in the Molineux role - with Wolves a club he played for and coached, while also being a lot closer to his family home.

If Edwards were to leave the club or be placed on gardening leave before Boro's clash with Birmingham, there's the possibility that Viveash and Watling take charge of the game.
