COUNCILLORS have granted planning permission for proposed new housing in the grounds of a landmark Saltburn hotel subject to various conditions.

- By STUART ARNOLD Local democracy reporter stuart.arnold@reachplc.com @LDRArnold

The six terraced homes will be built on grassland, which was once gardens associated with the Saltburn House hotel on Marine Parade, and will front on to Coral Street.

The same application, considered by Redcar and Cleveland Council's regulatory committee, also includes improvements to the building itself.

These include the reintroduction of a spire feature on top of the central clock tower, reinstating the original Victorian-era brickwork on the south, west and north elevations and the painting of metalwork.

A design and access statement said the new homes, which will have three bedrooms each, would seek to reflect the “almshouses aesthetic” complimentary to the original purpose of the building.

Parking would be provided, amounting to two spaces per home, while an existing boundary wall would be retained to protect the privacy of nearby occupiers.
