MICHAEL Carrick admits that Middlesbrough’s game management has to improve with the recent defeat at Sheffield Wednesday just the latest occasion in which his side have thrown away points from a winning position.

Game management must improve - boss

Boro head into the final two games of the Championship season with their play-off fate still in their own hands. Three points behind Coventry City, they play the Sky Blues on the final day of the season at the CBS Arena and will head there knowing a win secures a top-six finish, providing they beat Norwich City on Saturday at the Riverside.

But they go into the clash with the Canaries on the back of three defeats in four, with Sheffield Wednesday just the latest occasion in which they've thrown away a lead to not win.

Boro have dropped 25 points from winning positions this season, which is a real frustration because only Leeds United have led in games more often than Boro this term. With five defeats and five draws from winning positions, it’s a record that matches Luton Town's - with the Hatters currently battling relegation.

"There’s no getting away from it, it's far too high,” Carrick conceded.
