THE Union Flag will fly from council buildings in Stockton all year after councillors voted in a show of unity.

- By GARETH LIGHTFOOT Local Democracy Reporter

Politicians on all sides agreed on the idea of flying the national flag from council premises, as a symbol of freedom, democracy, liberty, respect, tolerance and the rule of law.

Councillors spoke of the importance for national, local and civic pride, while distancing the flag from those who “misuse” it.

Cllr Niall Innes, Conservative member for Hartburn, proposed the motion to ask the council’s cabinet to fly the Union Flag all year round on council offices, as government buildings and councils were encouraged to do in government guidance.

This is in addition to days when the flag must be flown by command of the King.

Seconding the motion, Conservative group leader Cllr Tony Riordan said: “This is a tremendous and patriotic motion put before the council. The government guidance is clear.
