Telco chamber raises concerns over 'Konektadong Pinoy' bill

The Philippine Chamber of Telecommunications Operators (PCTO) has sounded the alarm over key provisions in the proposed Konektadong Pinoy bill, warning that it could undermine national security, disrupt fair competition, and discourage investments in the country's telecommunications sector.

- Ehda M. Dagooc

The bill, a priority measure of the current admin-istration, seeks to expand internet access by easing the entry of new players in the data transmission industry.

However, in a statement PCTO said the bill's current form removes vital safeguards-particularly the legislative franchise requirement for international gateway facilities, cable landing stations, and satellite services-which could expose critical infrastructure to foreign control.

"Despite good intentions, the Konektadong Pinoy bill disregards constitutional safeguards, weakens regulatory oversight, and could threaten both national security and consumer welfare," the PCTO said adding that the group should work toward a version that "protects critical infrastructure and benefits Filipinos."

Under the bill, entities can register with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) without undergoing the usual scrutiny, raising concerns about shell companies with state affiliations gaining access to strategic assets.
