DepEd to roll out bamboo-made desks, chairs nationwide

The Department of Education (DepEd) will distribute 144,081 sets of bamboo-made desks and chairs to public school learners in February and March, as part of its push for sustainable and locally sourced school furniture.

In a statement, Education Secretary Sonny Angara said an additional 3,235 sets will also be provided for teachers.

The distribution of bamboo-made school furniture is in line with Executive Order (EO) No. 879, issued in 2010, which mandates the use of bamboo in at least 20 percent of school furniture procurement. Angara said the use of climate-resilient, engineered bamboo also supports President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s agenda to promote sustainability and strengthen local industries.
