City Hall enforces weight limit on Bacayan Bridge

To prevent further deterioration of its structure, the Cebu City Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) has formally recommended the immediate enforcement of a six-ton weight limit on the Bacayan Bridge, as urgent calls for retrofitting and rehabilitation are being emphasized.

This DEPW recommendation reinforces an earlier directive that barred six-wheeler trucks and heavier vehicles from using the bridge. This follows a structural inspection that revealed signs of deterioration, prompting urgent calls for retrofitting and rehabilitation to ensure public safety.

The technical report, prepared by Engineer II Jonathan L. Tumulak Jr. and approved by DEPW Acting City Engineer June Nadine M. Sison, was conducted after recent flooding caused by Typhoon Tino raised water levels to about one meter above the bridge pavement. Engineers noted that the high-water levels may have contributed to the uplift of the bridge structure.
