CRACKDOWN | Curfew continues for third day after unrest as security forces tighten control and political blame games intensify in Ladakh
-
Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was arrested under NSA on Friday, two days after violent clashes between protesters and security forces left four civilians dead and over 90 injured in Leh.
His arrest, confirmed by officials, came at 2.30 pm when a police team led by Ladakh DGP S.D. Singh Jamwal took him into custody. The charges against Wangchuk were not immediately specified. He was taken away to an undisclosed location.
The Union Home Ministry has directly blamed Wangchuk, a prominent member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), for allegedly provoking unrest during the agitation demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He had been on a fortnight-long hunger strike, which he called off on Wednesday after violence erupted during a bandh call. Wangchuk denied instigating the crowds, condemning the violence and insisting the movement was peaceful.
