United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order threatening new tariffs on any country that supplies oil to Cuba, escalating Washington's pressure campaign against Havana.

- Agencies

The order, signed on Thursday, authorises the imposition of additional duties on imports from countries that “directly or indirectly sell or otherwise provide any oil to Cuba”. It describes the Cuban government as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security, the Reuters reports.

“The regime aligns itself with — and provides support for — numerous hostile countries, transnational terrorist groups, and malign actors adverse to the United States,” the order states, naming Russia, China, Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah.
