GAVAI BIDS ADIEU

- FPJ News Service

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, who retires on November 23, delivered an emotional and reflective farewell address at the Supreme Court on Friday, stressing that he never saw the position of a judge as an office of power but as an opportunity to serve the nation. Speaking from the ceremonial bench, he said, “As a lawyer and then as the judge of the High Court and then a Supreme Court judge, I have always believed that the office is not an office of power but an opportunity to serve the society, to serve the nation.”

With Friday marking his last working day, CJI Gavai was joined by his successor, Justice Surya Kant, as the Bar and government law officers recalled his contributions, values and legacy. The CJI reflected that his journey from joining the legal profession in 1985 to demitting office today was one of continuous learning. "When I joined the profession in 1985, I joined as a student of law, and today, when I demit the office, it would be as a student of justice," he said, Live Law and Bar & Bench report.
