Delta woes tracked to a paddy glut

A sharp increase in the area devoted to the short-term kuruvai paddy season across the delta districts has triggered severe logistical pressure on the government's grain procurement network.

The agricultural department reports that cultivation in the pivotal Cauvery Delta region surged to about 6.1 lakh acres, up some 2.2 lakh acres from the prior cycle, driven by timely water releases from the Mettur reservoir.
