Why Meta Has Blocked Livestreaming For Teenagers On Instagram

In a major update to its teen safety policies, Meta has restricted access to Instagram's Live feature for users under the age of 16, unless they have explicit parental permission.

Why Meta Has Blocked Livestreaming For Teenagers On Instagram

This move, part of a broader effort to shield minors from harmful online experiences, reflects growing concern about the digital vulnerability of younger users. The decision also aligns with legal pressures and new legislation, such as the UK's Online Safety Act, aimed at making the internet safer for children.

Here's a detailed look at what Meta has changed, why it's happening now, and what it means for young users, parents, and the broader tech landscape.

What Has Meta Changed?

Meta's latest teen safety update has two main changes that directly impact how young users can use Instagram:

• Livestreaming Restrictions: Users under the age of 16 can no longer go Live on Instagram without parental consent.

• Nudity Blur in DMs: Instagram blurs images it detects as containing nudity in private messages. Now, teens need parental approval to turn off that blur filter.

These measures are intended to limit teens' exposure to inappropriate content, online predators, and potential exploitation—risks that often increase during unsupervised livestreams or when explicit content is shared in private chats.

The platform had already implemented features to detect and blur sensitive images automatically, but making it harder for teens to disable these protections adds an extra layer of safety.

INSTAGRAM'S TEEN ACCOUNT SYSTEM

The new livestream restrictions are just one part of Meta's evolving "teen account" system, originally launched in 2023 on Instagram and now being extended to Facebook and Messenger. This system automatically applies safety settings to users under 18, including:

• Daily Time Limits: Parents can set how much time a teen spends on the app.

• Time-based Access Control: Parents can block access during certain hours (like school time or bedtime).

• Messaging Oversight: Parents can see who their teen is messaging with.
