Fainting, or syncope, in children at school is often a frightening experience for both the child and those around them. While most episodes are benign and recover spontaneously within a few minutes, it is important not to ignore fainting as it can occasionally be a sign of underlying heart problems that require prompt medical attention.

SCHOOL FAINTING EPISODES IN CHILDREN: BENIGN OR A RED FLAG?

UNDERSTANDING FAINTING

Fainting or syncope occurs when the brain transiently receives insufficient blood flow, often due to a sudden drop in heart rate or blood pressure. The most common type in children is vasovagal syncope, which happens when the autonomic nervous system overreacts to triggers such as dehydration, prolonged standing, pain, or sight of blood. This reflex causes the heart to slow down and blood vessels to dilate, leading to a temporary drop in blood flow to the brain and ultimately resulting in transient loss of consciousness and fall. With the fall to the ground, the head assumes a lower level than the heart causing restoration of blood flow to the brain and prompt recovery.

While vasovagal syncope is usually benign and does not indicate serious heart disease, fainting should never be dismissed outright. In rare cases, fainting can be a symptom of an underlying cardiac condition such as arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms), structural heart defects, or other heart diseases that can affect blood flow and heart function.
