Sawan and the worship of Shiva: A deep dive into monsoon devotion

Falling during the peak monsoon season—typically July and August—this period is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the supreme ascetic and cosmic dancer. Sawan's rains, lush landscapes, and spiritual energy converge with the ancient practice of worshipping Shiva, making it a uniquely transformative time for millions across India.

The Significance of Sawan in Hindu Culture

Sawan marks the arrival of the rains, when parched earth receives new life, rivers swell with fresh water, and fields become verdant green. In Hindu lore, water symbolizes purity, rejuvenation, and spiritual cleansing. Offering "jalabhishek" (ritual water pouring) to a Shiva Lingam during this time is considered supremely meritorious.

Mondays in Sawan—known as Shravana Somvars—are especially auspicious. Devotees fast, visit Shiva temples, chant mantras, and perform elaborate rituals to invoke divine blessings.

Mythological Foundations of Sawan Worship

Several legends underscore the link between Sawan and Shiva:

Chandra's Curse: The Moon god Chandra was cursed to wane continuously due to his arrogance. He wore the crescent moon on his matted hair and sought Shiva's compassion. Worship during Sawan, especially on Monday, is believed to gain Shiva's grace for relief from afflictions.
